The name 'Mac OS' was, allegedly, created when Apple started its program to encourage Macintosh clones; the intent may have been to provide branding for the OS, separate from the hardware. 'Mac OS X' was probably picked as a name to suggest continuity with the earlier OSes with 'Mac OS' in their names, even though Mac OS X was a new OS.

Is your Mac up to date with the latest version of the Mac operating system? Is it using the version required by a product that you want to use with your Mac? Which versions are earlier (older) or later (newer, more recent)? To find out, learn which version is installed now.

  1. In the late 1990s, Apple's older operating systems for the Mac (System 7, Mac OS 8, and Mac OS 9) were, as explained by Cult of Mac, steadily losing ground to Microsoft which had seemingly figured out the formula with Windows 95 and Windows 98. In 1996, under its chief executive officer at the time, Gil Amelio, Apple made the desperate move.
  2. Scans the average Mac in under 30 seconds. Run the malware scanner in the background while you boot up your favorite game and it's done by the time you're ready to play. You can even customize your scans to run when you're not using your Mac at all, at any day, at any time.

If your macOS isn't up to date, you may be able to update to a later version.

Which macOS version is the latest?

These are all Mac operating systems, starting with the most recent. When a major new macOS is released, it gets a new name, such as macOS Big Sur. As updates that change the macOS version number become available, this article is updated to show the latest version of that macOS.

If your Mac is using an earlier version of any Mac operating system, you should install the latest Apple software updates, which can include important security updates and updates for the apps that are installed by macOS, such as Safari, Books, Messages, Mail, Music, Calendar, and Photos.

Apple has been making it very difficult to download & reinstall macOS recently. For best results connect the laptop directly to the router using an Ethernet cable to eliminate any possible WiFi issues.

It is possible the hard drive on your laptop could be starting to fail. Installing an OS is very stressful and perhaps it was unable to download a critical component to the drive. To check the health of the hard drive run DriveDX. If the drive shows as healthy, then post the report here using the 'Additional Text' icon which looks like a piece of paper.

FYI, using Command + Option + Shift + R should boot to the oldest compatible version of macOS still available from Apple.
